The thing about Lissie is that even though she is very clearly folk and from the heart of the midwest, she just hasn’t caught on in the States the same way she has in Europe. England especially loves her, as I found out first hand last fall. Perhaps it has something to do with her music belonging to this new class of young female artists with dusty, seductive voices and mature writing skills to match. Lissie is in good company of this new-soul revival, joining the likes of Duffy, Amy Winehouse and Adele. In case you missed the trend here, all of these ladies are from the UK, where they enjoy the majority of their popularity. They definitely embraced this revival much more than the States did, allowing for US born artists like Lissie to gain similar praise on their turf (both literally and otherwise). So while I was in England and a bunch of my friends at uni had Lissie-fever, I genuinely believed she was a UK artist until I was told otherwise. It was there that I bought her first LP, ‘Catching A Tiger’, and it was there that Lissie’s music became an integrated part of my life’s soundtrack. Many moons later, I still can’t believe that she hasn’t received more credibility, popularity or airplay in the States. Yes, there is a good chance you have probably heard one of her songs used in a television show, but the sad truth is that she has yet to appear on Letterman or Leno. You want to do something patriotic and show your support for the United States? Go buy a song from Lissie. Even if it’s just a measly single download on iTunes - just do it. Where you are does matter to the record labels, and your purchases do count. Let’s show a rising ‘American’ star that music fans back in her homeland appreciate her talents, too.

I’m going to give you four different songs from Lissie because I cannot decide on only one. The first video gives you a sense of her personality and her ability to perform beautiful music without the bells and whistles of production. The second is the opening track for ‘Catching A Tiger’, that I enjoy very much. The third is an official music video for one of her more popular songs, and typically tends to be a favorite for everyone. The final video is Lissie’s rendition of ‘Bad Romance’ - when I saw this, I actually liked the song for the first time. It’s definitely worth a couple minutes of your time.
